Topics: Prenatal and Perinatal (Conception through 3 yrs)

“We now know that the brain is most impressionable from conception through seven years. With this knowledge we would be amiss to neglect the earliest experiences of our lives in saying that these experiences are not valid or formative or that they are an intricate part of healing. These early experiences are the foundation of our being in so many capacities. Our ability to self regulate which will have a direct bearing upon our response or reactivity to stressful life experiences for the rest of our lives are formed during this early period. Our earliest of attachment begins in utero which has a direct effect upon our ability to have secure attachments in childhood and when we are grown adults. This early period of our lives is indeed the foundation and must be considered when speaking of psychological comprehensive healing. I believe the prenatal and perinatal period lays a foundation for the future in many ways. Without addressing this early period I have found that an individual makes progress in their healing but that this progress is limited in nature. I am most aware of how difficult it is to get to what I call the negative “core messages” and maladaptive responses to this early trauma that an individual carries for the rest of their lives. What the prenatal and birth psychologists have embarked upon is reframing and making impressions to heal these early experiences. The work is phenomenal and I believe that a healthy psychological state of well being must include interventions in this early period.
